Researching recycling on campus

September 27, 2008
I checked into university housing. Along with my keys and receipt I received a recycled pin, notebook and zipper pouch.
I was excited they were promoting recycling! I made my way to my room and settled in. I did not find any recycling bins in my apartment...hhhmmm.

September 29, 2008
I asked Wilson Choi, one of the workers at the university halls reception desk if there was
any recycling being done on campus. He stated there was NOT, but I could go to the Northwick Park train station and drop off my newspapers and magazines there, which is near campus but there are only two very small recycling bins.

In the mean time I gathered my recycling and saved it in a few bags I had. I used and reused things that had another use for them rather then just sending them to the recycling or garbage bins.

My recycling started building up pretty fast, so...

I went to the Northwick Park Tube Station and found
two small bins located outside the station exit. They are very small bins and most of the time very full. This location is some distance from the campus and by no means capable of holding even the smallest portion of the campus recycling.

I started walking around the university campus taking photographs..

After walking for a few minutes I did find recycling bins, but they only recycled glass.

October 2, 2008
I spoke with David Morris, the man that collects our trash, about recycling on campus. He told me there was a bin, but the students were using it to put their every day garbage into it and there was not much being done about correcting it.

I FINALLY found the recycling bins on campus!! There is one set of bins on the campus, located near the parking area and the glass structure on the halls. I must admit, if I was not looking for them you would not find them. There are no signs to show this is a recycling area. I walked by them before and had no idea they were there.

I looked inside the bins and they were empty, except for a few bits of rubbish.

October 30, 2008
The residential assistants, Charlotte Bracey, Lucy Brinicombe and Andrew Bailey, the Senior Residential Assistant came to our apartment to ask if we needed anything. I asked them if there was any recycling on campus and where it was actually located. The two women (they both work at the campus mind you) looked at each other and were not sure about any recycling being done at all. The male assistant told me about the recycling bins and where to find them. He said they weren’t being used much and most students were using them as garbage bins rather than recycling.

October 31, 2008
I spoke to the trash collector again today. He told me the students were using the recycling bins for their garbage instead of walking a few feet further to use the garbage bin. I asked him if he knew how often the recycling bins were being collected or if there was much being done about the issue. He wasn’t sure about the schedule, but knew there was little being done about the lack of information on the subject.

"The world we have is the product of our way of thinking.", Albert Einstein

I have been reading Twyla Tharp's book, The Creative Habit. She is an American choreographer, but her story hits a cord with many types of artists and creative people. I really found her writing quite inspiring. I would suggest browsing through chapters 2, 5 and 6. At the end of most of the chapters there are great creative exercises also. Good stuff!

The Total Beauty of Sustainable Products by Edwin Datschefki is a really good book with some really great information about the basic rules to go by when designing a product in order for it to be environmentally friendly.
This book goes by five basic rules of design: Cyclic, Solar, Safe, Efficient and Social.

I am still reading Green Design by Paul Burall and may keep it for some time. I am really getting some good information for my project. It covers reusing items, minimizing materials, using recycled materials, etcetera...

I added the following ,which I found useful information:

- Recycling reduces waste in the landfills and is far more energy efficient than making things from virgin sources. Recycling paper alone can cut energy in half compared to manufacture from trees; recycled glass uses a quarter of the energy of first-time glass and the energy of recycling aluminum is cut by 95%.

This book also covers product life and second uses for packaging once it has been used. For example, container jars that become drinking glasses. This where the problem comes in because many people find the second uses unattractive and not desirable by the consumer. -This is a problem I have to deal with when promoting my Trash to Treasures!!!

A Lesson in Proposal Writing

I spent a good part of my morning interviewing students in the laundry facility on campus. I got some great insight regarding recycling on campus. I got my laundry done and a bit of research done as well!!

I then went to campus to meet with Liz Grop, the head of the Illustration Department, about my project. I was told I need to write a proposal to present to her and my instructor.

I am now starting on my proposal...Yikes!!!

More of Trash to Treasure

So I finished my soda pop or water and now have this empty shell. I am not heading for that bin just yet!!

I heard from a few more people this week and was told of some new uses for our plastic bottles. We are going to get more life out of that before it heads to the recycling.

A vase as well as a funnel for getting those tricky liquids back into its original bottles. I like the idea of having a plastic vase for those of you that have children or really clumsy people around the house...hehe.

I found another great use for my plastic veggie container. I like to place all of my coffee and coffee scoop in it. This way the coffee doesn't cause a mess in my cupboards and I don't have to hunt inside the coffee package to get my scoop!
p.s. Yes, I like to use clothes pins on all types of things and seldom for what they are really made for. Keep that in mind!! There are MANY uses for one product.

I just love these ice cream containers. The lid stays on very nice so they are great for leftovers! I am also using one for a sewing kit and another as a first aide kit. Hey, I love ice cream. This is a win win situation!!

Happy days and happy hunting for treasure!

I decided on the name, Penn Point Designs, partially because of my last name starting with the Penn and I am also into designing messenger bags, so the penn point for sewing...I feel it is quite diverse. It fits!

I have been brainstorming for my logo design and sketching out some ideas on paper....I decided against the blue hamster. He just isn't working for me, a bit dodgy I think. I think he will do just fine right here on my blue blog! :-)

I haven't a clue which direction to go with my design...hhmm? Anyone out there? I think simple is best. What do you think?

What are you doing?!

I want to know about you! WHAT are YOU DOING around your home, apartment, school or work space to REDUCE your CONSUMPTION? Are you reusing your plastic bottles or taking your own coffee cup to work and school?
Are you recycling at all? Do you want to start a recycle habit, but do not know where to start or how?

I want to know, so do tell and let us be honest with ourselves about this. Really!
